Melissa Lohman is a performer, choreographer, and visual artist from New York City. She currently lives in Rome, Italy. She received her BFA in 2000 from the School of Visual Arts, NYC. Since the mid-1990s she has created work for theaters, museums, galleries, and unconventional spaces internationally. Melissa considers the body as an element in relation to its surroundings, not necessarily as the central element in a composition.
Recent projects include: in 2024, her performance work Tramite within the light installation by Fabrizio Crisafulli, of the same title, in the burial chamber of the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, Rome, for the project Piramide Contemporaneo. Her durational performance, The Practice of Space, for the installation by the architects Grazzini, Tonazzini, Colombo, for Open House Rome XII Edition.; in 2023 her durational performance for the installation Transiti by the artist Fabrizio Crisafulli at the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara.; in 2022, she danced with her Noguchi Taiso teacher Mari Osanai in the performance Deposition at the Kyoto International Butoh Festival.; her site-specific performance, Across, with Flavio Arcangeli at the MAXXI Museum, Rome for the event The Heretical Body. Butoh dance from its inception until today. ; in 2021, her site-specific performance and solo exhibition A Sweet Topia at the Museo delle Mura, Rome; from 2018-2020 she was invited to perform at the New York Butoh Institute Festival. She teaches a workshop she calls The Conductive Body.
