Butoh Class w/ Eilish Henderson

This class will investigate butoh through an eco-somatic lens with a focus on the water body.  Through individual movement with awareness of the collective, we will investigate our role in the "ecosystem" of our environment through explorations of floating, suspending, and dissolving.  Accessing both metaphorical and physical realities, our vessels will expand through a fluid range of intensities, developing sensitivity and subtly.  Moving through varying states of stillness, movement, and that which lies in between, we will ask our bodies to respond to its subconscious desires.  This class will enhance connections to the self through expanding upon a spectrum of movements, deepening our ecological consciousness, and engaging in an active practice of presence and release.

Eilish Henderson is an interdisciplinary artist, choreographer and scholar working with subjects of the body based in Brooklyn.  She is currently on faculty at Westchester Community College and Iona University.  She is the Artistic Director of SHADOWSWELL, a project-based collective established in 2024 that integrates movement modalities of butoh, contemporary dance, and performance art. She has trained with contemporary dance artists such as: Doug Varone, Valeria Valleto, Sean Curran, Adam Barruch, and Javier Padilla. Eilish holds an M.A. in Dance Education from New York University and has trained in Butoh with Akihito Ichihara and Vangeline.

Cancellations for all classes must be made 12 hours before the class start time. Students who do not attend the class will not receive any form of credit or exchange.
