Sindy Butz is a German-born interdisciplinary visual and performance artist, Butoh dancer, and somatic movement educator living and working in New York City. She creates conceptual endurance performances, performance-based video art and photography, multisensory sculptural installations, olfactoric scent projects, and Butoh dance solos. Butz executes her art and dance work with a passion for researching the human body, body-mind connection, movement analysis, introspection, behavior, altered states of consciousness, and slow-time perception. She is a certified BodyMind Dancing™ and FlemingElastxx® instructor, Butoh-, Chi Kung- and Dynamic Embodiment Practitioner. Sindy has been a principal dancer of the Butoh Company Vangeline Theater from 2010 to 2018 and joined the New York Butoh Institute faculty in 2016. She has trained extensively in Japanese Butoh dance, Noguchi Gymnastics, and Katsugen Undo with Vangeline, Yoshito Ohno, Semimaru of Sankai Juku, Natsu Nakajima, Mari Osanai, and Tetsuro Fukuhara, among others. Sindy teaches and guest lectures at dance schools, universities, and art institutions across North America and Europe. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Visual Arts from the academy AKI Enschede (Netherlands) and a Master's Degree in Art Science from the University of the Arts Berlin, focusing on coaching through art and Corporate Social and Cultural Responsibility program development (CSR/CCR). She continued her postgraduate research with a renowned DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) scholarship at the New York University in assistive technology. Sindy currently pursues her Dynamic Embodiment™ Somatic Movement Therapy Training with Dr. Martha Eddy.
The Vangeline Theater does not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identification. Our classes are open to everyone interested in studying butoh. Our workshops and classes are trauma-informed. We welcome students with disabilities, including students with hearing impairment, and/or students who are visually impaired or wheelchair-bound students. Our classes are open level and beginners are welcome.
Our Butoh classes are trauma-informed; however, we recommend that prior to taking any class, prospective students familiarize themselves with our studio policy, particularly students with a history of PTSD or students with any mental health condition.
