This workshop led by Vangeline is based on Vangeline’s critcically acclaimed book Butoh: Cradling Empty Space. The workshop will mix theory and practice; each module will consist of a brief lecture/demonstration, warm up, and practical exercise leading to creative improvisation for participating students. Vangeline will take questions from students at the end of each session.

Reading the book prior to or during the workshop is recommended, but students who haven’t read the book are welcome to participate. All students, beginners included, will learn simple techniques that are easily accessible and deepen their understanding of butoh.

Enrolled students will receive an email with more detailed information after they sign up, with recommended reading.

In this workshop, we will explore:

Techniques of stop-signal and motor imagery; Reactive vs. voluntary movements in choreographed and improvised butoh; Vision and visualization; Coactivation of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system in Butoh.

Beginners are welcome and students may take single days if they wish.

Vangeline draws on 18 years of experience as a Butoh teacher and dancer, and has 35 years of expertise in the field of dance. She is the author of the critically acclaimed book of non-fiction Butoh: Cradling Empty Space. Vangeline is a 2018 NYFA/ NYSCA Artist Fellow in Choreography, the winner of the 2015 Gibney Dance's Beth Silverman-Yam Social Action Award, and the founder of the 15-year running, award-winning program “Dream a Dream Project", which brings Butoh dance to incarcerated men and women at correctional facilities across New York City.

She is a member of the International Association for Dance Medicine. She teaches trauma-informed Butoh classes.

The Vangeline Theater does not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identification. Our classes are open to everyone interested in studying butoh. Our workshops and classes are trauma-informed. We welcome students with disabilities, including students with hearing impairment, and/or students who are visually impaired or wheelchair-bound students. Our classes are open level and beginners are welcome.

Our Butoh classes are trauma-informed; however, we recommend that prior to taking any class, prospective students familiarize themselves with our studio policy, particularly students with a history of PTSD or students with any mental health condition.
