Sindy Butz is an interdisciplinary performance artist, Butoh dancer, and somatic movement educator. She grew up in the suburbs of communist East Berlin, Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Butz started her dance education in Ballet, Dance Theater, and East German and Russian Folk Dance at the age of 6 in the award-winning Children's Dance Theater Strausberg under Nora Jarchow-Dürrenfeld, student of the Gret Palucca School of Dance.

Butz holds a Bachelor's Degree in Visual Art from the academy AKI Enschede (Netherlands) and a Master's Degree in Art Science, from the University of the Arts Berlin (Germany), with a focus on durational performance art, video art, and multisensory sculptural installation. In 2009, equipped with the DAAD research grant on assistive technology, body art, and wearable art she became a fellow at the Interactive Telecommunication Program at New York University and moved to New York.

Shortly after her arrival, she started training Japanese Butoh dance with Vangeline and the Vangeline Theater dance company. Butz has trained intensively with her masters Vangeline, Maureen Fleming, Natsu Nakajima, Tetsuro Fukuhara, Mari Osanai, Tadashi Endo, Yoshito Ohno, and Semimaru (Sankai Juku) among many other teachers since 2009. She has been a principal dancer of Vangeline Theater from 2010 to 2017.

Sindy is passionate about the explorations of body-mind connections, the unconscious mind, time perception, timelessness, sensitivity training as well as elements of Noguchi Seito, and Katsugen Undo in Butoh training. In her Butoh classes, she seeks to open new doors for the students to develop a curiosity for the unknown and experience transformation, body awareness, unpredictable movement, ritual, and a sense of community.

In 2015, she continued her dance education with Dr. Martha Eddy and became a certified teacher in BodyMind Dancing™ (2017), and is currently pursuing her Dynamic Embodimeant™ (Principles from Laban/Bartenieff and Body-Mind Centering®) Somatic Movement Therapy Training. In 2017 she completed a two-year mentorship with Maureen Fleming and became certified in the physical training system FlemingElastixx® with a focus on strengthening the psoas muscle, awareness of the diaphragm, sound patterns, and voice.

She teaches BodyMind Dancing™ classes at Movement Research New York, Studio 55C New York, and Somatic-Butoh and Butoh classes at the New York Butoh Institute.

In New York, Butz has performed at the Brooklyn Museum, Queens Museum, New Museum, Theater for the New City, Dixon Place, and Asian American Art Alliance among many others. She has performed and exhibited solo projects nationally and internationally. Her body and movement-based solo projects Hearth and Homage to Hildegard of Bingen have been featured by the Marina Abramovic Institute.
